What We Desire
Every Hildan a Global Citizen of Tomorrow: Reflective, Concerned and Participative.
Subjects We Offer
- Geography
- History
- Combined Humanities
How We Nurture
Exposure – In the design of our Humanities lessons, students are exposed to the use of inquiry which is at the heart of our humanities instruction and learning. Students are challenged to think critically, be self-directed and reflective learners, and caring and collaborative contributors.
Students will undergo the key stages of inquiry-based learning;
- Sparking Curiosity
- Gathering Data & Information
- Exercising Reasoning
- Reflective Thinking
Experience – Students will deepen their knowledge and acquisition of 21st century skills through inquiry investigation as they examine real-world/ authentic geographical, historical and societal issues
Geographical Investigation (GI): Through GI, students will use geographical skills acquired in the classroom to conduct field work investigations or an analysis of their observations on current issues. This process helps students to understand contemporary environmental issues and gain in-depth knowledge that allows them to have deeper awareness about sustainable development, and their role as active citizens of the community.
Historical Investigations (HI): Through HI, students get to “do” history by carrying out research and applying their historical knowledge and skills to form responses to an authentic historical issue and communicate them through an end-product. They will develop the ability to form logical conclusions about the past, and to acquire a deeper understanding of Singapore’s history and heritage.
Social Studies (Issue Investigation): Through issue investigation, students will identify and examine a societal issue of concern closely. They will seek to question assumptions and develop opinions from multiple perspectives before proposing well-reasoned recommendations to help address the societal need(s) as a means to promote student agency and active citizenry.
Issue Investigation is infused in our Sec 3’s Hildan Advocacy (Integrated Project), in collaboration with the Character & Citizenship Education and the English Language department.
Extension – The Nellie Mitchell Talent Development Programme (NMP) - Humanities
The NMP (Humanities) is a stretch programme specially designed for Sec 2 students who have demonstrated a strong aptitude and keen interest in History.
Students selected to participate in this programme will embark on a research journey to explore Singapore’s heritage. They will be provided with opportunities to conduct oral interviews with different industry experts, interpret and evaluate historical sources, and learn to make connections with the past, present and future to deepen their appreciation for Singapore’s historical journey. Selected students are also nominated to represent the school to participate in external competitions (e.g. Istana Heritage Trail) to apply their knowledge and skills.
