Service Learning
Our Teaching Approach
Service-Learning Pedagogical Approach
With reference to ‘The 5 stages of Service Learning : A Dynamic Process, Cathryn Berger Kayes (2010)’, we develop our teaching approach in all our VIA programmes, termed the ‘SOLVE’ cycle. Teachers facilitate the students’ learning and curate meaningful experiences by utilising the ‘Solve’ Cycle and Borton’s Model of Reflection.
Borton’s Model of Reflection
Developmental, covering various domains of service
We design the students’ experiences to be developmental, and varied; spanning the four/five years of learning in school.
Levels | Domains of Service | Brief description |
Secondary 1 | Family & School | Learn to care for those who are within the students’ closest sphere of influence |
Secondary 2 | Environment | Become agents of change by addressing environmental problems. |
Secondary 3 | Children & Family | Catalyse student agency by having students choose an area of advocacy. |
